Gospel of Thomas Saying 2 – Serie Enigmatic Sayings of Jesus

Gospel of Thomas 2

The second saying of Jesus, recorded in the Gospel of Thomas by Didymo Judas Thomas, one of the twelve disciples, found in Nag Hammadi, preaches:

Saying 2

Jesus says: “The one who seeks should not cease seeking until he finds. And when he finds he will be dismayed. And when he is dismayed, he will be astonished, And he will be king over the All.”

“The one who seeks.” Knowing or not, we are all seekers. The problem is that many seek in the wrong place.

Happiness in the wrong place

This reminds me of a Nasrudin tale: Nasrudin, a folkloric character of the Sufi tradition, lost his ring and was searching for it. A friend came and started helping him on the search. After many minutes of fruitless hunt, the friend asked: “Are you sure you lost the ring here?” Nasrudin replied: “I’m sure I didn’t.” The friend was puzzled: “I don’t understand. Why are we searching here?” To what Nasrudin answered: “The place I lost it is too dark. Here, we have the lamp light to ease our search.”

Are you laughing? How many people look for happiness in new houses, new cars, new material goods that cannot be taken to the other life? Like Nasrudin, they may be looking for happiness under the light because it is easier.

The search for happiness

Doing this pointless search in the first half of live is acceptable. After all, it is a way to strengthen the ego, and we need one for the second half of life, when the search is tougher. But then, we have to change our objectives.

The world myths carry lessons for life, and one I particularly like is Parsifal’s Grail search. In his first visit to the Grail Castle, he doesn’t know what to ask and loses his first opportunity. Probably he was thinking of battle victories, fame and treasures. He has to search for many years, suffer, give up, before he returns to the Castle knowing what to do.

Jesus says

Jesus said that “one who seeks should not cease seeking until he finds.” And you will be dismayed by how close you have always been from what you searched. And you will be astonished to find out how simple is the answer to your problems.

“And you will be king over All.” The world is yours, and you are its king. Not the world you were looking for, but the one that really matters. The world of the spirit.
